How to Write an ATS Resume in 2026
Over 90% of large companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter resumes before a human ever sees them. If your resume isn't optimized for these systems, you're invisible — no matter how qualified you are.
What is an ATS?
An Applicant Tracking System is software that companies use to manage job applications. It parses resumes, extracts data (name, skills, experience), and ranks candidates based on keyword matches against the job description.
Popular ATS platforms include Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, and Taleo. Each parses slightly differently, but the principles for beating them are universal.
Why Most Resumes Fail ATS Scans
- Fancy formatting — columns, tables, graphics, and headers/footers confuse parsers
- Missing keywords — if the job says "React" and you wrote "ReactJS", it may not match
- Wrong file format — some ATS can't parse PDFs with embedded images
- Non-standard section headers — "Where I've Been" instead of "Experience"
The ATS-Friendly Resume Format (2026)
Follow these rules for a resume that scores 90+ on any ATS:
1. Use Standard Section Headers
Stick to: Summary, Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications. The ATS looks for these exact words to categorize your content.
2. Single-Column Layout
Two-column resumes look great to humans but confuse ATS parsers. Use a clean single-column format with clear hierarchy.
3. Mirror the Job Description Keywords
Read the job posting carefully. If it says "project management," use that exact phrase — not "managed projects." ATS does exact-match and semantic matching.
4. Quantify Everything
ATS can't judge quality, but recruiters can. "Increased revenue by 23%" beats "Helped grow revenue." Numbers stand out in the parsed output.
5. Use .docx or Simple PDF
When in doubt, submit a .docx file. If using PDF, ensure it's text-based (you can select text), not a scanned image.
6. Skip Graphics, Icons, and Charts
That skill-level bar chart? ATS sees nothing. Spell out your proficiency: "Advanced: TypeScript, React, Node.js"
